About Pre-Planning

"Pre-planning offers peace of mind to you and your family."

Future planning is one of the basic principles of life involving many decisions. The same principle may be applied to funeral pre-arrangement or funeral pre-planning, where many important and difficult decisions must be dealt with. People plan for many activities in their personal family lives. Many will plan in advance for births, weddings, college/university, and retirement, but in the past, rarely have people planned for their own funeral.

Funeral pre-arrangements are an important part of estate planning. It relieves families of making decisions, which can be stressful, in addition to easing the financial burden.

Some people may feel uneasy with the idea of pre-planning their own funeral, but the reality is that everyday more and more people are pre-planning and pre-paying their funerals. There is no question that making funeral arrangements when a death has taken place is a difficult and costly proposition. Many families overspend and make hasty decisions at the time of a death, and for this reason, more and more families are realizing the importance of planning ahead. With such factors as inflation, extended family members not living in the same community, and other changes in our society, planning your own funeral makes a lot of sense.

Some of the biographical information required during a pre-arrangement will be used to complete government forms such as the statement of death for registration purposes, clergy forms and cemetery/cremation forms. This information is kept in a confidential file until the need arises. This information would include:

  • Name and address
  • Date of birth
  • Social insurance number
  • Birthplace
  • Marital status
  • Full name of husband
  • Maiden name of wife

  • Occupation
  • Father's name and place of birth
  • Mother's maiden name and place of birth
  • Cemetery location
  • Name and address of next of kin/informant/executor

Why Consider Pre-planning?

Pre-planning allows you to explore your options for a ceremony, discuss costs, and helps to ensure that you have the final say in your funeral wishes. By thinking ahead for your funeral, you can make rational and logical decisions at a less emotional time, and you can obtain peace of mind by assuring your final wishes are carried out as specified. These decisions will help spare the survivors the unnecessary burden of having to make these choices while they are grieving. If you have already specified funeral wishes in your will, make sure your family is aware of them. Most wills are not read until after the funeral has taken place, and your wishes may not fulfilled.

Choosing Your Payment Method

By pre-paying your funeral you can ensure that there is money available for your funeral when it is needed, and to take the financial burden away from your survivors. Pre-paying is a versatile process which allows you to pay in a single payment or through a range of convenient monthly payment plans. When a funeral is paid in advance, the same services and merchandise selected at today's costs will be rendered at any time in the future with no additional cost to the family. Most people find monthly payments more convenient, especially for those with fixed incomes. It allows you to pay for your funeral by small monthly payments as apposed to one large single payment. Pre-payment offers financial security and peace of mind for your family.

Who Should Consider a Pre-Paid Funeral?

  • Retirees and those considering retirement.

  • Those living alone. You will enjoy peace of mind knowing that the funeral plans are complete, since there is no one else to make the arrangements.

  • Those planning on Canada Pension Plan death benefits. You will need to understand these benefits and how they are paid to your estate.

  • Those who simply wish to help their families. You will lift the burden of the decision at a difficult time.
  • Those with strong preferences for their funeral service. You can be sure your wishes will be fulfilled.

  • Those who benefit from social assistance programs. You need to know how to maximize eligibility through pre-arrangement.
